HOW IT HAPPENED

In their first game of the season, the Elms Blazers Women's Basketball team showed toughness and grit when they traveled to Salem, MA to take on the Vikings. The game went back and forth early, as both teams kept pace with one another. Jade Lewis (Orlando, FL) and Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, CT) scored a couple of early points, with Lewis seemingly involved in every play. The Vikings led 22-17 after the first quarter, but the lead never got out of reach for the Blazers. Lewis continued to score for the Blazers, keeping them in the game, while the Blazers dominated the glass to clean up missed shots. Offensive rebounding was key for the Blazers, which resulted in a lot of second chance points. Going into halftime, the Blazers were down 42-33.

At the start of the second half, the Blazers continued to be aggressive in the paint and on the glass. Talia Uribe got to the line all night, going 7-11 on the night, and had two crucial free throws to cut the lead to nine early in the third quarter. However, Salem State took advantage of Elms' difficult shooting night, and went on another run to go up fourteen late in the third. Elms clawed their way back with help from Julianna Liebow and Lewis. Going into the fourth, the Blazers eventually cut the deficit to six with under four minutes to go. However, Elms struggled to score in the final minutes, and Salem State escaped with a narrow 87-82 win.
