Women's Basketball Topped by Blue Jays in Conference Match Up

WEST HARTFORD, CT- The Women fought hard for 40 minutes against the Saint Joseph University (CONN.) Blue Jays on Thursday night falling, 65-55 for the final.

How it Happened

The Blazers came up short by nine points in the first quarter against the Saint Joseph University (CONN.) Blue Jays, with lead changed 3 times early in the first couple minutes. With a low scoring first qurter the Blazer only put up 7 points on the board including the one and only three in the first by Soliyana Asfaw (Livingston, NJ) with just 2 minutes left. The Blue Jays sent the Blazers to the line a couple times allowing the Blazers to secure 2-4 free throws going 50% from the line. Elms was able to limit the fouls and keep the Blue Jays off of the foul line and denied any shots from outside the arch in the first 10 minutes of play. The Blazers trailed 16-7 heading into the second.

The Blue Jays were able to build on their lead and hold at least a 10 point difference between the Blazers and themselves for the rest of the half. Despite the number on the board the blazers were not shy of scoring, grad student Brianna Metellus (Springfield, MA) went 2-2 from the 3PT-line to keep the Blazers in the game along with another three knocked down by Sadie Hunt (Sandwich, MA). The Blazers out rebounded the Blue Jays, 10-9 in the second quarter attaining 5 on both offensive and defensive ends. Both teasm ended the quarter putting up 14 points to end the half with the Blue Jays still leading 30-21.

In the third quarter both teams managed to send their opponent to the free throw line quite a bit allowing both teams to put up free points on the board. The Blazers went 5-8 from the charity stripe, while the Blue Jays went 6-7. niether team could sink a shot from outside the arch, but that did not slow the Blue Jays down as they went 7-19 from the field putting up 20 points in the third. The Blazers fell short on points only securing 15 for the quarter, Talia Uribe (South Hadley, MA) was able to record 8 of those points with four of them off of offensive put backs.  USJ continues their lead 50-36 heading into the final quarter.

The final quarter the Blazers brought some fire and out scored the Blue Jays 19-15, knocking down 8-17 from the field and recording 14 boards divided perfectly from offensive to defensive. Kayla Jackson recorded 6 of her 14 points in the final quarter going 3-5 from the field. The Blazers were unable to take down the USJ Blue Jays ended the game 65-55 for the final.

  • Kayla Jackson put up 14 points with 10 rebounds and 2 assists for a double double agains the Blue Jays
  • Brianna Metellus recorded 13 points and went 2-3 from beyond the arc
  • Talia Uribe knocked down 10 points going 4-6 from the foul line
  • Sadie Hunt shot 100% going 2-2 from the field and 1-1 from the three point line.
