Women's Basketball Edged by Cadets

CHICOPEE, MA - Thursday night the Elms College Women's Basketball team came up short conference match up against the Norwich University Cadets in Picknelly arena, 62-57.

Records: Cadets (6-5, 2-2) | Blazers (4-7, 5-0)

How it Happened

The Blazers came out on Thursday night with a slow start against the Norwich Cadets. With a field goal percentage of 27.3% and a three point from starter Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, CT), the Blazers came up short 13-8 in the first quarter. 

The Lightning lit up the board in the second quarter with two three's from gaurd Sarah Evangelista (West Haven, CT) and four more points from Johnston. The Blazers also dominated in the paint registering 10 boards with 7 of them on our defensive end. Soliyana Asfaw (Livingston, NJ) and Kayla Jackson (Saugus, MA) both recorded 2 boards to help deny the Cadets second chance points. From the success on the field for the Blazers they brought the game to a two possesion game heading into the half, 28-25 led by the Cadets.

After the half time break the Blazers stepped back on the court recharged, post grad Brianna Metellus (Springfield, MA) put up 10 points in the third quarter going 2-2 from beyond the arc and fromthe free throw line. With Mehtellus' shooting streak the Blazers worked their way 45-42 lead over the Cadets by the end of the third. 

The fourth quarter was a back and fourth battle between who was going to hold the lead. The Blazers were unable to stop Norwich's forward, Maren McGinn who went on to cash in eleven points from the paint for the Cadets. With  McGinn's ability to post up in traffic the Cadets were able to secure the win over the Blazers pulling away in the final minutes. Elms would come up short, 62-57 as the final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Kayla Jackson (Saugus, MA) put up 11 points, handed out 2 assists, 2 blocks, and record 9 boards.
  • Brianna Metellus had 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals and secured 10 points
  • As a team the Blazers shot 61.1% (11-18) from the free throw line.
