Blazers Come Up Short to Lasers

NEWTON, MA - The Elms College Women's Basketball team started the new year in Newton, MA for a conference match up where they fell short to the Lasell University Lasers, 71-64 final.

How it happened

The Blazers kicked off the night out shooting the Lasers 13-9 in the first quarter knocking down two three pointers from sophomore Sarah Evangelista (West Haven, CT) and first year Soliyana Asfaw (Livingston, NJ). Elms ended the first 10 minutes with a field goal percentage of 26.3% over Lasells 23.5%. Both first year fowards Mikayler Patch (North Attleboro, MA) and Kayla Jackson (Saugus, MA) carried the Blazers in rebounds recording 10 together adding to the 15 total boards for the quarter.  

The Lasers pulled away with the lead heading into the half after putting up 21 points in the second quarter lead by Shirle Major cashing in 10 of her teams points. The Blazers were able to get to the line nine times in the final ten minutes of the first half adding 7 extra points to their score. Despite the free throw oportunites the Blazers went 4-11 from the field and 0-2 from outside the arc causing them to fall behind the Lasers. Lasell held the lead by two points heading into the second half, 30-28.

Rahmia Johnston (Trumball, CT) went 3-5 from the field to open up the second half for the Blazers by putting up 6 points and recording 2 boards. The Blazers were able to attain eight boards in the third quarter, six of them from the devensive end to help reduce the Lasers second chance opportunities. As a team the Blazers attempted 14 shots, but only 6 fell causing the lead for the Lasers to climb. Lasell was able to hit a couple beyond the arc and were even more successful inside the arc helping them add another 20 points to their score. The Blazers began to fall behind Lasell, 50-41.

With a stellar final quarter from first year Mikayler Patch the Blazers almost came back to win it over the Lasers. Patch was able to put up 12 points in the final quarter leading the Blazers from the field and knocked down two free throws. Not only did the forward from North Attleboro, MA shoot lights out in the fourth quarter but she also led in rebounds for the Blazers attaining 3 defensive boards. Even though the Blazers were ablee to out score the Lasers 23-21 in the final quarter, Lasell had built up a 5 point lead allowing them to finish the game 71-64 for the final.
