Blazers Come Up Short to Blue Jays

CHICOPEE, MA- The Elms College Women's Basketball team hosted the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Wednesday night where they came up short in the conference match up.

How it Happened

The first quarter was a back and forth battle with both teams' defenses giving a lot of pressure. Due to a late offensive surge by Wellesley led by Pujita Shukla with 9 points, the Blazers defense was unable to stop the Blue Jays. The Blazers were outscored 12-10 in the first 10 minutes of play, Sarah Evangelista (West Haven, CT) led the Blazers with 3 points and Kayla Jackson (Saugus, MA), Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, CT), and Talia Uribe (South Hadley, MA) also contributed 2 points. The score after the first quarter was 12-9 led by USJ.

The Blazers entered the second quarter adding another 9 points to the board, Mikayler Patch (North Attleboro, MA) led with 5 points and Kayla Jackson adding another 4. The Blazers defense was still pestering the Blue Jay offense forcing them to turn the ball over four times. The Blazers go into the half down 31-18. 

With the third quarter underway the Blazers offense stepped back on the court out scoring the Blue Jays 13-10 from the field with points from Jackson (7) and Sadie Hunt (Sandwich, MA) adding 4 to the total as well.  Elms crashed the boards this quarter outrebounded USJ 12-11, four of those boards were offensive and led to points second chance points. The Blazers brought the game to a ten point difference heading into the final quarter down 41-31. 

The fourth quarter was back and forth between the two offenses, the Blazers were outscored in this quarter 18-14. Four of Elms' 14 points were scored by Kayla Jackson who got to the line twice going 2-3 from the charity stripe. The Blazers were not able to come back with a final score of 59-45.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Kayla Jackson finished the game with a double double attaining 17 points and 14 rebounds. 

  • As a team Elms recorded 36 rebounds, 28 of them were defensive borads
