CHICOPEE, MA - The Elms College Women's Basketball team falls in Picknelly Arena Wednesday night to the visiting Wellesley College Blue.

How it Happened

The first quarter was a back and forth battle with both teams' defenses giving a lot of pressure. Due to a late offensive surge by Wellesley led by Pujita Shukla with 9 points, the Blazers defense was unable to stop the Blue. The Blazers were outscored 14-10 in the first 10 minutes of play, Sarah Evangelista (West Haven, CT) led the Blazers with 3 points and Brianna Mettelus (Springfield, MA) also putting up 3 points. The score after the first quarter was 14-10 led by Wellesley.

The Blazers entered the second quarter adding an easy 13 points led by Mettelus attaining 7 of them. The Blazers defense was still pestering the Wellesley offense forcing them to turn the ball over six times. The Blazers managed to close the gap turning it into a two possession game heading into the half, down 27-23.

In the third both teams managed 12 rebounds, the Blazers led with 8 offensive boards over the Blues 6. Mikayler Patch (North Attleboro, MA) had 3 boards for the Blazers and went 1-1 from the foul line and added in a field goal to the Blazers 11 points in the quarter. The Blazers and the Blues continued to pester eachothers offense with tight defense, causing 14 turnovers between both the teams. The Blazers go into the final quarter down 40-34. 

The fourth quarter was all Wellsley, the Blue offense led by Elle Petra with 6 points. The Blue went on to outscore the Blazers 25-9 in the 4th. Five of Elms' nine points were scored  by Talia Uribe (South Hadley, MA) who got to the line twice going 3-3 from the charity stripe. The Blazers were not able to come back with a final score of 65-43.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Brianna Mettelus led the Blazers scoring 10 points 

  • Rahmia Johnston had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals 

  • The Blazers went 87.5% from the foul line

  • As a team Elms recorded 28 rebounds, 17 of them were defensive borads
