Women's Basketball Caps Regular Season with Road Win at Anna Maria

Chicopee, MA - The Elms College women's basketball team capped off its reagular season with a road win at Anna Maria. With the win, the Blazers secure the #7 seed in the GNAC playoffs and will face #10 seeded Colby-Sawyer in a first round playoff game on Tuesday 2/22 at 7PM at Picknelly Arena.

THE BASICS

SCORE: Elms 79, Anna Maria 62

RECORDS: Elms (13-8, 9-8 GNAC), Anna Maria (9-14, 3-14 GNAC) 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Blazers used a 12-point first quarter from center Angelica Peguero-Flores (Springfield, MA) to power out to a 19-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. A 22-9 run in the second quarter would stretch the lead to 16. The AMCATS kept the visitors off the board for the final 2:35 of the first half and shrunk the lead to seven but never got closer, sending Elms to a 79-62 road win.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Peguero-Flores lead all scorers with 26 points on 12-19 shooting. She also pulled down 17 rebounds for a dominating double-double.
  • Aiyanalee Lopez (Leominster, MA) also had a double-double for the Blazers, scoring 11 points and recording 12 rebounds.

 

FROM THE DESK OF COACH PROULX: "l am very proud of our effort and focus for 40 minutes. We knew how important this game was leading into GNAC playoffs and we really turned up our defensive efforts in the second half. We had a season high 21 assists and that's certainly been a focus for us throughout the last few weeks -- really playing team basketball and using each other to get the best shot. We are thrilled to host the first round of the GNAC playoffs on Tuesday against Colby Sawyer."
