Blazers Overpower Lyons on Senior Night

Chicopee, MA – The Elms College women's basketball team defeated Mount Holyoke College on Monday night in non-conference action a t Picknelly Arena.

THE BASICS:

SCORE: Elms 71, Mt. Holyoke 59

RECORDS: Elms (11-8, 7-8 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Elms started off the game with a layup from McKenzie Huria (Terryville, CT) in 0:46 of play and never looked back. A layup from Angelica Peguero-Flores sent the Blazers into the first break with a 19-12 lead. 

The home side started the second quarter with an 8-0 run and controlled the play, sending the game into the intermission with a ten-point lead 33-23.

Mount Holyoke started the third with a three-pointer, but Elms quickly responded with a 7-0 run. The Blazers continued to dominate the action with a three-pointer from Sarah Evangelista (West Haven,CT), followed by back-to-back steals and a third quarter lead 47-38.

The Lyons managed to cut the deficit to only 7 in the final frame, but back to back layups from Peguero-Flores put the game out of reach for the visitors and Elms took the non-conference win 71-59.

The Blazers celebrated the careers of their four seniors (Angelica Peguero-Flores, McKenzie Huria, Abigayl Sherbourne, and Sarah Guerin) before the game

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Peguero-Flores led the Blazers with 26 points
• Evangelista pitched in with 18 points off the bench

FROM THE DESK OF COACH PROULX:  "It was such a great night celebrating our three amazing seniors and one graduate student. They have all excelled throughout their college careers and being able to win on senior night was great. Ang led us throughout the night offensively and Sarah E really gave us a lift off the bench both offensively and defensively. We have a big week ahead as we prepare to wrap up the GNAC regular season."
