Blazers Grab Overtime Win Over Lasell

Newton, MA – The Elms College women's basketball team picked up an overtime GNAC win over Lasell University tonight on the road, 68-57. 

THE BASICS:

SCORE: Elms 68, Lasell 57

RECORDS: Elms (9-7, 6-7 GNAC), Lasell (8-11, 6-7 GNAC) 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Aiyanalee Lopez (Leominster, MA) paced the Blazers on both ends, scoring 31 points, grabbing 23 rebounds, and adding 4 steals. Angelica Peguero-Flores (Springfield, MA) added 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Sarah Evangelista (West Haven, CT) added 5 steals and 5 points off the bench for the Blazers. 

The first quarter saw the Blazers come out strong with 4 players on the board led by Lopez with 5 points. Elms led 16-10 and shot 7-20 (35.0 % from the field). The second quarter saw the Blazers with a 9 point lead on the heels of a layup from Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, CT) to put them up 20-11. A string of Laser points points and a 5-18 scoring margin saw the Blazers down 21-28 at the end of the first half. The Blazers shot 1-12 (8.3%) from the field.

The Blazers put up a fight to start the third quarter and 9 points from Lopez tied the game 32-32. The score remained tight at the end of the quarter where Elms trailed 37-40. The Blazers shot 5-16 (31.3%) from the field and were 2-3 (66.7%) from the three-point range.  Both teams traded points in the start of the fourth quarter before Elms took a 49-46 lead. The Blazers held a 53-50 lead with 8 seconds left in the game before Lasell hit a 3 with 6 seconds remaining. Regulation time ended with the teams tied 53-53. Elms shot 6-14 (42.9%) from the field.

The Lasers scored first in overtime, but it was the only lead they would hold before the Blazers opened the game. Elms went on to outshoot the Lasers 15-4. Lopez led the Blazer offense with 10 points with Peguero-Flores adding 5. Elms shot 54.5% from the field and were a perfect 3-3 from the freethrow line. Elms won the game 68-57.
