Softball Swept By Johnson & Wales on the Road

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Elms College Softball team traveled to Johnson & Wales University for a conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Elms first-year pitcher Caity Flynn (Colchester, CT) would start the doubleheader pitching one full inning with a strikeout. The WIldcats would score early in the first inning, scoring six runs, including two home runs. Johnson & Wales would hold the Blazers scoreless in the top of the second inning, and would continue to add to their lead with 11 runs in the bottom half of the inning. First-year Jill Dykema (Preston, CT) would come into pitch during the second inning to relieve Flynn to help stop the deficit. Dykema would pitch three innings with a strikeout and the Blazers defense would hold off the JWU offense scoreless in the third and fourth innings. In the top of the fourth inning, Elms would get on the board after a sacrifice fly by senior Kelsey Bennett (Chicopee, MA) to left field to bring home senior Josie Cammarata (Wolcott, CT), but the Wildcats defense would secure the victory 1-17. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Dykema: 3.0 innings pitched, two hits, and a strikeout.

  • Flynn: 1.0 innings pitched, two hits, and a strikeout.

  • Junior Sarah Fortini (Florida, MA): two hits.

  • Bennett: one run batted in.

Game 2
Flynn would take the mound again for Game 2 of the doubleheader, pitching 2.1 innings. Johnson & Wales would score five runs in the first inning. The Blazers would hold the WIldcats scoreless in the bottom of the second inning, but JWU would score six runs in the bottom of the third inning. During the third inning, Dykema would come to pitch and would finish the game with 1.2 innings pitched and a strikeout. But the Wildcats would continue to score five more runs and secure the sweep, winning Game 2 0-16.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Cosmos: one hit.

  • Bennett: one hit and a walk.
