PRIOR TO THE GAME
The Elms College Softball team hosted their annual Strikeout Cancer Game, this year raising awareness for Ovarian Cancer. The Blazers and Bulldogs were joined by Linda Fergueson, the great-aunt of first-year Jill Dykema (Preston, CT), and Barbara Boutin, the grandmother of senior Kelsey Bennett (Chicopee, MA), to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Elms first-year pitcher Caity Flynn (Colchester, CT) would start the doubleheader pitching three innings, two of those innings scoreless with two strikeouts. The Blazers would get on the board first from an RBI-single by senior Josie Cammarata (Wolcott, CT) that scored junior Kyla Cook (Taunton, MA) to give the Blazers an early lead. Dean responded by scoring three straight runs, putting a lot of pressure on the Blazers pitching staff to try and keep the Bulldogs at bay. Elms would get on the board again off of a sacrifice fly by junior Katie Cosmos (Wolcott, CT) to cut the Bulldogs lead to 3-2. Dean would go on to score five straight runs again, roughing up first-year pitcher Dykema. Down to their last outs, Elms scored some late runs, courtesy of Bennett, who recorded an RBI single and scored on a passed ball, and from a Cook RBI-single. Even though Elms mounted a late comeback, they came up short against the Bulldogs, falling 8-5. During her four innings pitched in game 1, Dykema threw three strikeouts and two scoreless innings.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Cook: three hits, one run batted in, and two runs scored.

  • Bennett: three hits, one run batted in

  • Cosmos: two hits, one run batted in

Game 2
Dykema would get the call to start game 2 of the doubleheader, pitching four innings, with three straight scoreless innings. Dean jumped off to an early lead in the first four innings, going up 2-0 and silencing the Blazers bats. Elms couldn't get things going and looked like they were going to get swept. Flynn would come into the game to relieve Dykema on the mound, and would pitch three scoreless innings and only allowing one hit. However, in the bottom of the fifth inning the bats came alive. With two runners on base, Cosmos recorded an RBI-single which was followed with an RBI-single from Cammarata to tie the game at 2. A double by Dykema would put the Blazers up for good, giving them the 3-2 win over Dean.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Cosmos: two hits, one run batted in, and a run scored.

  • Cammarata: one hit and one run batted in

  • Dykema: one hit and one run batted in

UP NEXT: The Blazers will travel to Johnson & Wales University for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 21st at 12:00 and 2:00 P.M.
