Softball Struggles Against Strong Penn State-Brandywine and DeSales Lineups

LEESBURG, FL - The Elms College Softball team continued their 2024 Spring Break trip in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday against Penn State-Brandywine and DeSales University at Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex for the Spring Games Collegiate Softball Tournament.

Score: Elms College 0 | DeSales University 14
Records: Blazers 1-5, 0-0 (GNAC) | Bulldogs 5-1, 0-0 (MAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
PSU-Brandywine Nittany Lions got on the board quickly in the top of the first inning scoring two runs but Elms would answer back with a run of their own in the bottom of the second when junior Sarah Fortini (Florida, MA) drove in junior Kyla Cook (Taunton, MA). Following that, the Nittany Lions would take over offensively scoring an additional 12 runs and would hold off the Blazers with a strong defensive showing, defeating Elms 14-1.

Junior Katie Cosmos (Wolcott, CT) would go 3-for-3 in the game with a double in Game 1.

Game 2
The Blazers had trouble keeping up with the DeSales Bulldogs offense on Wednesday. First-year Kaelyn Zakaitis (Amherst, MA) started on the mound for the Blazers, with first-year Jill Dykema (Preston, CT) also making an appearance, combining with four strikeouts. 

Senior Josie Cammarata (Wolcott, CT) and Fortini would both go 1-for-2 in the matchup.

The Blazers will look to rebound in their trip Friday.

UP NEXT: The Elms Softball team will wrap-up their spring break trip taking on Marietta College and Wittenberg University in a doubleheader in Clermont, FL at the Legends Way Fields on Friday, March 8th at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.
