Schwark Records 5 Stolen Bases in Double Header Split

LONGMEADOW, MA - The Elms College Softball team finish the night 1-1 in the double header against the Bay Path Wildcats. Blazers took the first game 6-4 followed by a 10-2 loss to the Wildcats.

How it Happened

Jayden Dow (Springfield, MA) started in the pitching lanes for the Blazers in their first game against the Wildcats. The sophomore stayed in the circle for the full 7 innings recording 5 strikeouts and only giving up 8 hits, out of the 33 batters faced.

The Blazers kicked off the first inning cutting Bay Paths first at bat short with a 1-2-3 inning. Recording her first stolen base of the afternoon, Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, NY) was able to steal to second setting herself up in a better scoring position. Nicole Defeo (Watertown, CT) was able to reach first due to an error by the wildcats center fielder, sending Schwark home for the first run of the game. Blazers up 1-0 after the first inning.

In the top of the third the Wildcats were able to chalk up their first run after C. Austin singled, advancing M. Tessmer to third and I. Ferrara home. The Blazers would end the inning after that RBI leaving two left on base for Bay Path.(Score 1-1)

Schwark hit a base hit and recorded her second stolen base, advancing to second before Defeo is walked in the bottom of the third. Both baserunners successfully advanced, stealing to the next base now with Schwark on third and Defeo on second. With both runners in optimal scoring positions with no outs, Kelsey Bennett was able to crack a double sending both home for a two RBI hit. Score now 3-1 heading into the fourth inning.

For both teams the fourth inning was a big inning with a player from each recoridng a two RBI hit. For the Wildcats E. Scheeren singled, B. Evanchak advanced to second sending home O. Stebbins scored; G. Ramsey scored. With the score tied 3-3, the Blazers are now up to bat. After another strong at bat for Bennett she was able to find the gap and singled to send home both Schwark and Kyla Cook (Taunton, MA) to regain the lead over the wildcats, 5-3. 

With her fifth RBI of the game, Bennett was the cleanup batter of the game sending home the Blazers 6th and final run to secure a marginal lead over the Wildcats.

Just two outs in the top of the seventh the Blazers were about to hold the Wildcats at three runs, til G. Ramsey singled was able to catch a piece of the ball to send home their fourth run of the game. The Blazers would get the final out on a fielders choice play to wrap up their first win of the 2023 season.

How it Happened

In game two of the double header the Wildcats made moreconnection with the ball overpowering the Blazers 10-2 for the final.

Josie Cammarata (Wolcott, CT) recorded a ribbie with a base hit advancing Katie Cosmos (Wolcott, CT) to second and sending Schwark home to get the Blazers on the board. In the same inning Bennett recorded her sixth RBI of the afternoon when reaching on fielders choice and Cosmos reaching home. 

Bay Path recorded their runs in the top of the first, tird, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Second basemen T. Suffolett led for the wildcats with 3 RBI against the Blazers. Left fielder O. Stebbins sent home two runners and both F. Ruggiero and M. Tessmer recorded one RBI a piece.

The Blazers would split the double header against the Bay Path Wildcats.
