Blazers Walk-Off Lasers

CHICOPEE, MA. – The Elms College softball team split their conference doubleheader against the Lasell University Lasers on Wednesday 7-9 and 10-9 (8 innings).

Before the games, the Blazers honored Head Coach Cheryl R. Condon and her 36 years at the helm. In her time as head coach, Condon led the program to 5 NCAA appearances, 4 conference championships, coached numerous all-conference players, amassed 470 wins, and is a member of multiple Hall of Fames. Coach Condon also served as the Athletic Director of Elms College and is a full-time faculty member.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

 

Game 1: Elms 7, LU 9

The Elms College Blazers' effort to come back from down five runs in the fifth inning came up just short, as they fell 9-7 to the Lasell University Lasers on Wednesday. The Blazers scored three runs in their comeback attempt on a double by Josie Cammarata (Wolcutt, CT) in the fifth and a home run by Alli Alleano (Vernon, CT) in the sixth.

Elms College Blazers evened things up at four in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryane Fournier (Longmeadow, Mass) singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.

Jayden Dow (Springfield, MA) took the rubber for the Blazers. Dow allowed 15 hits and nine runs over seven innings, striking out five and walking zero.


The Blazers smacked one home run on the day. Alleano put one out in the sixth inning achieving 2 RBIs with DeFeo scoring from the home run.


Elms College Blazers racked up ten hits in the game. Sofie Oliveira (Windsor Locks, Conn.), Nicole DeFeo (Watertown, CT), Cammarata, and Fournier each collected multiple hits for Elms College Blazers. Fournier, Cammarata, DeFeo, and Oliveira each collected two hits to lead Elms College Blazers.

 

Game 2: Elms 10, LU 9

The Elms College Blazers took their game in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off double at the end of the game to topple the Lasell University Lasers. The game was tied at nine with the Blazers batting in the bottom of the eighth when Josie Cammarata secured the victory.


Both pitching staffs had their hands full, frequently dealing with runners on base. The Elms College Blazers collected 15 hits and Lasell had 15.

The Blazers scored five runs in the third inning. Elm's offense in the inning was led by Courtney Schwark (Kingston, NY), Sarah Fortini (Florida, MA), Nicole DeFeo, and Ryanne Fournier, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. This comeback gave Elms a 1 run lead going into the 4th inning.

After Lasell scored one run in the top of the fourth, the Blazers answered with one of their own. Elms answered by Cammarata hitting a double on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run when Schwark crossed home during the play.


Elms College Blazers evened things up at nine in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kyla Cook (Taunton, MA) hit a solo homer.


Going into the 8th inning the Blazers held off Lasell by capturing three outs in Lasell's four at-bats. In the final play of the game, Josie Cammarata was up at bat for the Blazers with 2 outs on the board and Alleano on third. Cammarata singled to center field bringing Alleano home for the win.


Dow was credited with the victory for Elms College Blazers. The hurler allowed six hits and two runs over five innings, striking out five and walking one.

Mackenzie Alvarado (Plainville, CT) started the game for the Blazers. The pitcher allowed nine hits and seven runs over three innings, walking zero.


The Blazers tallied 15 hits in the game. Schwark, Cammarata, Fortini, Cook, and Alli Alleano each managed multiple hits for Elms College Blazers. Cammarata and Schwark each collected three hits to lead Elms.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Cammarata went 5 for 7 with 6 RBI (including walk-off) with 2 runs scored in the doubleheader.

-Alleano went 4 for 6 with a Home Run, 2 RBI, and 5 runs scored for the day.

-Fournier, Schwark, and DeFeo had multiple RBIs on the day.- Cook hit their first home run of the season.

- The Blazers will be traveling to Regis College for their last regular-season conference doubleheader at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on Saturday 4/30.
