Men’s Volleyball Takes a Set from Rivier on the Road

NASHUA, NH - The Elms College Men's Volleyball team traveled to Rivier University in a conference match Tuesday night.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 1 (21, 29, 11, 22) | Rivier University 3 (25, 27, 25, 25)
Records: Blazers 7-20, 2-10 (GNAC) | Raiders 15-10, 8-3 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The two conference foes would trade points off of errors made by the other, until a kill by first-year Joey Crain (Southwick, MA) made a kill to help Elms take the lead. Rivier would come back to tie the match, but the Blazers kills from graduate student Pedro De Jesus (East Hartford, CT) first-years Nick Uschmann (Agawam, MA) and John Bellafronte (Enfield, CT) and a service ace by De Jesus, but Rivier would win the set 21-25.

The second set would start off with an early Raiders lead, but Elms would battle back with kills by De Jesus, Uschmann, and Bellafronte to bring the score to 4-6. The Blazers would then tie up the score after a service ace by first-year Al Sánchez (Guayama, PR). Elms would carry the momentum and see an offensive surge. Sánchez would make a second service ace and multiple kills by Bellafronte, De Jesus, and Uschmann would help the Blazers take the second set 29-27.

The third and final sets would begin with early leads for the Blazers and see offensive life with the help from graduate student Collin Liedke (Newington, CT), De Jesus, Bellafronte, and Uschmann, but Rivier would go on to capitalize on errors by Elms and win both sets, 11-25 and 22-25, and take the match 1-3.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • De Jesus: 13 kills, six digs, two service aces, and an assist.

  • Bellafronte: nine kills, five block assists, and two digs.

  • Liedke: 29 assists, three block assists, and 14 digs.

  • Uschmann: nine kills.
  • Sánchez: two service aces.

UP NEXT: The Blazers will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 6th in a home tri-match against conference foes Dean and Emerson at 11 AM and 3 PM at Picknelly Arena.
