Blazers End Week With a Tri Match Split

FRANKLIN, MA - The Elms College Men's Volleyball team finish out Saturday with a split conference tri match final, falling to the Emerson College Lions 1-3 and taming the Dean College Bulldogs 3-0.

How it Happened

The Blazer Men took down the Dean College Bulldogs in three sets, with a close final set of 25-21. Lewis Torres (Vega Baja, PR) handed out 39 assists against the Bulldogs to help the Blazers serge to the conference victory.

The Blazers finished out the first two sets recording 16 and 14 kills, while the Bulldogs recorded 9 kills in each set. Elms finished out the first set with a .333 (PCT) team hitting percentage and followed wth a .231 PCT in the second set. 

In the final set Dean managed to take the lead from the Blazers early after building off of a 6-0 point run, surpassing the Blazers by one point (12-13). The Blazers returned to the match after a quick timeout with a quick 2 points to regain their lead by one (14-13). From an attack error on the Blazers the Bulldogs were able to tie up the score one final time at 14's till the Lightning took off with their lead. Securing the final set after a final 3-0 point run. Elms won the conference match, 24-19 in the third set and 3-0 for the match.

How it Happened

The Blazer Men fought hard in the first three sets, coming up with a match point in the third set where they took down the Emerson Lions 26-24. Elms came up short 19-25 in the first set and were edged in the second just shy of a couple points with the final 23-25. 

To start of the match, the Blazers were only able to get runs of only two points slowing them on their climb to 25. Cecil Villa (Springfield, MA) led with 4 kills in the first set, followed by Jairam Rodriguez (Cidra, PR) who recorded 3 kills. The Lions would hit 25 before the Blazers, securing the first match point with the final set score 19-25.

The Lions lead 10-21 in the second set until the Blazers were able to take the match on a 9-0 point run, turning an 11 point lead into 2(19-21). Off of their 9 point run the Lightning Men secured 6 of the points from kills across the lineup, changing the pace of the set. With a final run attempt from the Blazers they were unable to deny the Lions their final point falling short by two points. The second match point granted to Emerson with a set score of 23-25.

Within the third set the Blazers were able to tie up the score on three occasions with a lead change off of the final tie at 24-24. The Elms men trailed for the entire set until the final points, with a kill from Moose Perry (Holyoke, MA) and a service ace by Rodriguez to secure the Blazers first match point.  

Unable to battle for two more sets the Blazers fell to the Lions 15-25 in the fourth set.
