Men's Volleyball get Dealt a Pair of Losses in Tri-Match over the Weekend

HOBOKEN, NJ - The Men have a tough start to their season after falling to Stevens Institute of Technology (0-3) and to Vassar College (0-3) in a tri-match over the weekend.

How it Happened

The Ducks were able to a generous lead over the Blazers, opening up with a 9-1 point run. With a kill from senior Ryan Perry and and a couple misshaps on the Ducks side of the net the Blazers were able to get 4 points in a row to slowly make their comeback. Stevens did not hold back as they continued to fire the ball down on the Blazers attaining 14 team kills to serge them to a set win. Stevens now leading in the match 0-1 after a 25-8 set.

In the second set the Blazers were able to get a quick 2 points on the board prior to how the first set unfolded. But due to the continuous power coming from the Ducks the Blazers began to trail to a comfortable lead by Steven's. With the set 4-19 the Blazers were able to grab 2 points including a kill by Jairam Rodriguez and an attack error from the Ducks. Despite the Blazers effort to overcome the lead that the Stevens men had built they ended the set falling 8-25, granting the Ducks a second set point heading into the third set. 

The Ducks were able to fire off seven quick points early in the third set, but was put to a hault after a Stevens service error and a kill by Rodriguez to bring the score 2-7. Unable to go on a run the Blazers were able to get scattered points during the final set, recording aa set high of eleven points against the Ducks. The Blazers would fall to Stevens 25-11 in the final set.

How it Happened

Vassar was able to grab the lead early and hold onto it for the rest of the set against the Blazers. With a continues chase the Blazers fought to close the gap that Vassar had created but were unable to bring the set closer than two points. With a final push to slow Vassars chance of reaching set point(14-23) the Blazers made a final run off of misshaps on Vassars side of the net. The Blazers would grab two free points but fall to a final of 16-25, Vassar taking the first set 0-1.

The second set was a back and fourth fight to start with the teams tying the match up at 7's, 8's and 9's with a final draw at 10-10 due to a service error by Vassar. With the game tied the Blazers made an attempt of grabing the lead but fell behind as Vassar built off of a 4-1 point run. Vassar would go up 0-2 in the match taking the second set 17-25.

In the final set the Blazers gradually made their comeback after Vassar put up a 13-21 point differential. Elms made a final push starting off of two errors by Vassar sending the Blazers on a 5-0 point run, including a kill by Ryan Perry. The Blazers closed the gap to a four point game (20-24) but Vassar was able to knock down the final point grabing the set and taking the match 0-3.

  • Joshua Figueroa Garcia recorded 4 kills and led with 9 digs against Vassar
  • Jairam Rodrigues put up 7 digs for the Blazers
