Blazers Fall on Road to MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Elms College men's volleyball team dropped their non-conference match-up tonight at the Rockwell Cage vs. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 1-3. 

THE BASICS:

SCORE: Elms 1 | MIT 3 (15-25, 13-25, 26-24, 15-25)

RECORDS: Elms (4-4, 2-0 GNAC) MIT (7-3, 0-1 UVC)

 HOW IT HAPPENED: 

The first set saw the Blazers and Engineers tied at 5-5 before a MIT run put the Blazers at a 10-16 disadvantage. The Blazers were able to fight off a pair of set points before falling 15-25.

The Blazers struggled in the second set as they quickly faced a 4-16 deficit. The Blazers were able to put together a string of kills from Luis Martinez, Carlos Mercado, Antonio Delgado Rolon and Pedro De Jesus to close the gap to 10 at 8-18. A late kill by De Jesus gave the Blazers their final point of the set before falling 13-25. 

The third set was a back-and-forth affair that featured 19 ties and eight lead changes. The Blazers faced match-point before a pair of kills from Delgado Rolon and Moose Perry gave them a 25-24 advantage. A MIT error gave the Blazers a 26-24 set win. 

The fourth set saw the Blazers trail early before a pair of aces (Perry and Cecil Villa) and a pair of kills (Martinez and Delgado Rolon) brought them within 2 at 7-9. The Engineers extended the lead to 8 from behind the service line before a Martinez kill ended it at 10-17. Despite a trio of late kills from Delgado Rolon, the Blazers fell 15-25. The Blazers lost the match 1-3. 

 

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Martinez led the Blazers with 11 kills while Delgado Rolon and Mercado added 10 kills a piece. 

Collin Liedke led all players with 13 digs with Martinez and Delgado Rolon each chipping in 9. 

The Blazers hit a match-high .419 in the third set and .171 for the match.
