Blazers Fall to No.1 Springfield on the Road

Springfield, MA – The Elms men's volleyball team fell on the road tonight to non-conference Springfield College, 0-3. 

THE BASICS:

SCORE: Elms 0 | Springfield 3 (15-25, 15-25, 17-25)

 

RECORDS: Elms (3-2, 1-0 GNAC), Springfield (5-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Elms kept pace with the Pride from the start as a service ace from Carlos Mercado (Barranquitas, P.R) and a kill from  Luis Martinez (Bayamon, P.R.) saw the set tied at 6-6. A pair of Mercado kills brought the Blazers within 4 at 13-17 before Elms faced a 2-8 run to close out the first set 15-25. The Blazers fell 0-1 in the match. The Blazers were the first to score in the second set on another kill from Mercado before going down 8-14 mid-set. The Blazers fought to within 3 with a service run from Moose Perry (Holyoke, MA) at 11-14 before facing a 4-11 point run from the Pride. Elms fell 15-25 in the set and 0-2 in the match. Elms would not go quietly and opened the third set with a 4-2 lead. A trio of kills from Mercado, Martinez, and Pedro De Jesus (East Hartford, CT) pushed the Blazers to 11-14. Despite a late kill from Mercado and an ace from Perry, the Blazers fell 17-25. The Blazers dropped the match 0-3.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Mercado tallied 9 kills and added one ace and one block. 

-Liedke led the Blazer defense with 4 digs and added 4 assists and one ace.

The Blazers are on the road for another GNAC match up at Colby-Sawyer College on Friday at 7pm.
