Men's Volleyball Splits Season-Opening Twinbill

MARCY, N.Y. – The Elms College men's volleyball team captured a victory in their 2017 season opener, and then fell in their nightcap during the opening day of action at the 2017 SUNY-Poly Men's Volleyball Invitational Friday night. The Blazers defeated Wells College, 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22), in four sets, and then lost Vassar College across three sets, 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 18-25). The Blazers move to 1-1 to kick off the 2017 campaign.

Against Wells, juniors Gabriel Reis Levy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Daniel Bondarovsky (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) fueled the Blazers attack, tallying 40 of the Blazers 47 kills during the match. Reis Levy slammed a match-high 21 kills with six digs, while Bondarovsky posted a double-double with 19 kills and a match-high 13 digs, adding four blocks. Sophomore John Dunphy (Farmington, Conn.) racked up 39 assists with nine digs, while freshman Audrye Alejandro (Las Piedras, P.R.) snared 12 digs in his collegiate debut.

During three sets with Vassar, Reis Levy recorded eight kills while Bondarovsky added six kills, four digs and three blocks. Dunphy registered 14 assists with five digs, and Alejandro grabbed a team-high eight digs in the loss.

The Blazers will return to action for day two of the SUNY Invitational, facing Cairn University at 12:00 p.m., followed by a duel with Nazareth at 2:00 p.m.
