Newbury Knocks Off Men's Volleyball in Three

BROOKLINE, Mass.- The Newbury College men's volleyball team defeated Elms College, 3-0, to improve to 4-1 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Saturday afternoon. First year middle hitter Wade Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) registered a match-high .625 attack percentage notching six kills on eight attempts while recording five block assists.

Newbury wasted little time jumping out to early 1-0 lead taking the first set by a commanding 25-14 score. Senior outside hitter Danny Tiner (Salem, N.H.) posted six kills on seven attempts with one error for a staggering .714 attack percentage. First year outside hitter Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) followed up with three kills and one block assist.

Hitting .750 as a team in game two, the Blazers came out of the gate with a commanding 6-1 advantage as they held the lead for the majority of the game. But they were unable to close out the contest as the Nighthawks made a charge with a 5-0 run midway through the set to pull within one of lead as momentum swung fully in the direction of Newbury as they held on for the 26-24 lead to take the 2-0 match advantage.

With momentum on their side, the Nighthawks closed out the match taking the third set 25-17. Robidoux was nearly perfect from the floor notching two kills on three attempts while first year outside hitter Xavier Brown-Rose (Wilbraham, Mass.) was force at the net with two solo blocks.

Elms first year outside hitter Daniel Bondarovsky (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led the Blazers notching a match-high 14 kills on 27 attempts with just five errors for a solid .333 attack percentage. Fellow first year Gabriel Reis Levy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) followed up with nine.

Newbury improves to 5-6 and 4-1 in the conference while Elms falls to 2-11 and 0-3 in NECC action. The Nighthawks break from NECC action when they host Albertus Magnus College Monday February 23rd at 7:00 p.m. The Blazers will be back in action next weekend, hosting defending NECC champion Endicott College, Saturday February 28th at 1:00 p.m.
