Daniel Webster College Sweeps Men’s Volleyball, 3-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College senior middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) downed a team-high 12 kills and senior setter Kevin Welsh (Wilbraham, Mass.) passed out 26 assists but Daniel Webster College used a match-high 13 kills from Ryan Howdeshell (Fairbanks, Alaska) and 11 from Joe Walz (East Longmeadow, Mass.) to help drive the Eagles to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-17) victory in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball match.

With the loss, Elms moves to 6-13 overall, 4-4 in conference action, while Daniel Webster improves to 9-11 on the season, 6-1 in league play.

Senior opposite hitter Kordel Latimer (Lynn, Mass.) and freshman middle hitter Austin DeCosmo (Tolland, Mass.) finished with six and five kills respectively, while Rainey added a match-high 10 digs.

Latimer chipped in six digs and sophomore libero Roger Conklin (Chicopee, Mass.) added five digs in the losing effort. Welsh added three kills and three digs, while sophomore middle hitter Cristian Arroyo (Chicopee, Mass.) added two kills and three assisted blocks.

Howdeshell and Walz propelled the Eagles to victory hitting .458 and .240 respectively, while setter Ariel Frias (Lawrence, Mass.) paced the attack with 30 assists. Jose Vargas (Lawrence, Mass.) contributed eight kills and Howdeshell served up four aces to help lead Daniel Webster in the win.

Frias finished with a team-best six digs, followed by five digs apiece from Walz and James Kenney (Coventry, R.I.).

After Daniel Webster claimed the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-17, the sides battled to six tie scores and four lead changes in the third stanza before the Eagles posted a 23-15 lead.

A kill by Rainey and an assisted block by DeCosmo and Rainey pulled Elms to within six (23-17), but Daniel Webster received a timely kill and an ace from Howdeshell to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the match.

Elms returns to conference action on Wednesday, March 26 when it travels to Newbury College for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
