Men’s Volleyball Sweeps by Lesley University, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Elms College senior setter Kevin Welsh (Wilbraham, Mass.) dished out 27 assists and senior middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) floored a match-best 18 kills to help the Blazers seal a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-17) sweep of Lesley University in Monday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball match in Cambridge, Mass.

With the win, Elms improves to 3-8 on the season, 1-1 in NECC action, while Lesley falls to 0-6 overall, 0-2 in league play.

Welsh directed Elms to a stellar offensive output as the Blazers hit .369 as a team led by Rainey's 18 kills on 32 attempts with just three miss-hits as he hit .469 for the contest.

Junior middle hitter Angel Castro (Carolina Puerto Rico) added eight kills on 13 attempts with just three misfires to hit .385 and he collected a match-high eight digs. Freshman libero Ian Isgut (San Juan, Puerto Rico) added six digs, while senior opposite hitter Kordel Latimer (Lynn, Mass.) dug four balls in the winning effort. Freshman outside hitter Austin DeCosmo (Tolland, Mass.) added three kills.

Lesley was led by Tyler Burns' (Newton, Pa.) nine-kill effort, while Melvin Morales (Chelsea, Mass.) and Makenzie Lukas (Reno, Nev.) chipped in six and four kills respectively.

Mitchell Ulacco (Winchester, Mass.) handed out 14 assists and five digs, while Burns finished with a team-high seven digs in the losing effort for the Lynx.

After posting a 2-0 lead in the match, Elms registered a 24-13 lead in the third set before Lesley rallied for four straight points highlighted by a Burns kill, a Ulacco service ace and a setting error by Elms to set the score at 24-17. Rainey sealed the match with his 18th kill of the contest to give the Blazers a 25-17 victory in the third frame.

In each set, Elms hit over .300 including a .391 clip in the second frame.

Elms returns to NECC action on Wednesday, February 19 at Daniel Webster College. First-serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Nashua, N.H.
