Men’s Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Springfield College, 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Elms College freshman outside hitter Jeff Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) downed a team-high six kills and senior outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) and junior opposite hitter Kordel Latimer (Lynn, Mass.) added five kills each, but No. 1 Springfield College used 11 kills from Alistair Matthews (Freehold, N.J.) to seal a 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-13) sweep in Friday evening's non-conference men's volleyball match at Dana Gymnasium in Springfield, Mass.

With the loss, Elms moves to 7-4 on the season while Springfield improves to 9-3 overall.

Elms' junior setter Kevin Welsh (Wilbraham, Mass.) dished out 18 assists and freshman outside hitter Aleksandr Kuzmenko (Chicopee, Mass.) assisted on two blocks and junior middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) added two service aces in the losing effort.

Springfield hit .483 as a team led by Matthews' 11 kills, followed by seven kills each from Mike Pelletier (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Greg Falcone (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) who also totaled two blocks and four assisted blocks.

Mike Becker (Lancaster, Pa.) dished out 28 assists and Nick Ferry (Valencia, Calif.) added eight digs to seal the victory for the Pride.

Elms returns to action on Saturday, February 23 when it travels to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) rival Newbury College for an 11:00 a.m. match and will then play Lasell College at 1:00 p.m.
