Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Bard College, Hilbert College in Day One Action of SUNYIT Tournament

UTICA, N.Y. – The Elms College men's volleyball team opened its 2013 season with sweeps of Bard College and Hilbert College in day one action of the SUNYIT Tournament in Utica, N.Y. on Friday.

Elms won its first match against Bard, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-15) and followed that with a sweep of Hilbert (25-23, 25- 15, 26-24) to start the season 2-0.

Elms 3, Bard 0

In the opening match, freshman outside hitter Jeff Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) floored a team-high 11 kills and hit at a stellar .556 clip in addition to assisting on a pair of blocks. Junior middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) chipped in seven kills, four assists and five digs, and senior outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) registered a team-high seven digs and two solo blocks.

Junior setter Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out a team-high 15 assists followed by seven helpers each from juniors Kevin Welsh (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Kordel Latimer (Lynn, Mass.) as the Blazers hit .304 as a team in its opening match.

Bard was led by Zack Nussdorf (Manhattan, N.Y.) who amassed a team-best seven kills, while Henry Kasiske (Los Angeles, Calif.) dished out 14 assists and registered two solo stuffs in the losing effort for the Raptors.

Daniel Gagne (East Longmeadow, Mass.) finished with a team-high four digs and Billy Williams (Livingston, N.J.) totaled five kills for Bard.

Elms 3, Hilbert 0

Against Hilbert, Cameron led the Blazers with 11 kills on 30 swings with just four errors, served up four aces and dug four balls.

Welsh paced the Elms attack with 17 assists and four digs and Vautrin notched nine kills to help the Blazers win their first two matches.

Elms returns to SUNYIT Tournament action on Saturday, January 26 when it squares off 12:00 p.m. and again at 2:00 p.m.
