Men’s Volleyball Splits Day One Action at MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Elms College men's volleyball team earned a split in day one action of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Invitational on Saturday afternoon, sweeping York College (N.Y.) before falling 3-0 to No. 9 Rivier College.

Elms won its opening match with York, earning a 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-14) to extend its winning streak to seven matches. Elms then lost to Rivier, 3-0 (25-18, 33-31, 25-23) and now stands at 7-2.

The Blazers will complete action at the MIT Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 12 with its first match against Emerson College at 10:30 a.m. followed by its final match against Johnson & Wales University at 3:00 p.m.

In Elms' match against York, senior outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) downed nine kills, added one assisted block and recorded two digs. Freshman middle hitter Angel Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) finished with six kills on 10 attempts with no errors, floored three service aces and added three assisted blocks, while junior outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) amassed 13 digs, assisted on three blocks and added a solo stuff.

Against Rivier, Acosta collected 13 kills on 22 attempts with just two miscues, while sophomore setter Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out 34 assists.
