Men's Volleyball Sweeps by Lesley University, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Elms College senior outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) smashed a match-high eight kills and recorded a .615 hitting percentage as the Blazers swept Lesley University, 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-21) in Thursday evening New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball match.

With the win, Elms improves to 3-1 on the season, 1-0 in NECC action, while Lesley falls to 0-3 overall, 0-1 in league play.

In the opening set, Elms found its best offensive stride of the match, hitting .316 as a team, led by four kills from junior outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) and four service aces from sophomore setter/libero Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) as the Blazers posted a 25-9 win.

In the second frame, Elms cruised to a 24-16 lead before a pair of Blazers miscues and an a kill by Christian Domingo (Los Angeles, Calif.) allowed the Lynx to pull to within in five at 24-19, but a Lesley service misfire lifted Elms to a 25-19 victory in the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third frame, neither team led by more than four points as Elms posted a slim 22-20 lead before a Lynx service error and an assisted block by sophomore outside hitter Kordel Latimer (Lynn, Mass.) and freshman middle hitter Angel Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) gave the Blazers a 24-20 advantage. A service error kept Lesley in the match until Latimer sealed the sweep with his second kill of the match lift Elms to a 25-21 victory.

Acosta and Cameron finished with eight kills each in the match, while sophomore middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) followed with seven kills and added a match-best 14 digs.

Cameron added 11 digs, Castro totaled eight digs and freshman middle hitter Timothy Frappier (Wilbraham, Mass.) added four kills.

Sophomore setter Kevin Welsh (Wilbraham, Mass.) dished out 13 assists, while Lebron registered six helpers in the win.

Lesley was led by Domingo and Max Hoevenaar (Orlando, Fla.) who floored seven kills apiece, while Melvin Morales (Chelsea, Mass.) distributed 13 assists in the loss.

Elms returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 when it hosts Newbury College and Mount Ida College in tri-match action in its 2012 home opener beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena.
