Men's Volleyball Splits Opening Weekend Action

UTICA, N.Y. - Elms College sophomore setter Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) handed out a combined 77 assists as the Blazers earned a split in opening weekend action at the SUNY Institute of Technology Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Elms suffered a hard-fought 3-2 (22-25, 25-16, 25-20, 14-25, 10-15) loss to Bard College, before besting SUNY IT 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-21, 25-16) in the second match to post a 1-1 start on opening day.

Against Bard, Lebron helped pace the Blazers with 38 assists and 12 digs, while junior outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) totaled 10 kills and 13 digs.

Sophomore Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) added 10 kills and 19 digs, senior outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) downed 10 kills and added three blocks, senior outside hitter Carlos DeLeon (Carolina, Puerto Rico) floored nine kills and totaled 16 digs and a service ace. 

Freshman middle hitter Angel Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) contributed 16 digs and two service aces as well as seven kills in his first collegiate action.

Against SUNY IT, DeLeon and Acosta led the way with a combined 21 kills (10 and 11 respectively), while Rainey chipped in nine kills. 

Lebron paced the offense with 39 assists and eight digs, while Cameron, Castro and DeLeon amassed 17, 14 and 11 digs respectively.

The Blazers are back in action at the SUNY IT Tournament on Sunday, Jan. 29 with a 10:00 a.m. contest against Gallaudet University, and a 12:00 p.m. contest versus Lancaster Bible College.
