Men's Volleyball Sweeps Wentworth, Lasell
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS WENTWORTH, LASELL
CHICOPEE, MA, Feb. 14, 2009 - Elms College sophomore outside hitter Alberto Bravo (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) and freshman outside hitter Sequiel Sanchez Velez (San Sebastian, Puerto Rico) combined for 51 kills to lead the Blazers to a sweep of Wentworth and Lasell in Saturday's men's volleyball tri-match at the Maguire Center.
Elms College (6-7, 4-2 NECVA New England) posted a 3-0 (30-26, 30-13, 34-32) win over Wentworth in the first match of the day, and later cruised to a 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-20) victory over Lasell.
Wentworth (4-7, 2-5 NECVA New England) earned a split with a hard-fought 3-2 (32-30, 29-31, 30-24, 18-30, 17-15) win over Lasell (6-6).
In the win over Wentworth, Bravo hammered down a team-high 15 kills and hit a sizzling .636, Sanchez Velez posted 13 kills and hit .524, junior setter Ivan Andujar (Carolina, Puerto Rico) handed out a match-high 45 assists, and sophomore outside hitter Carlos DeLeon-Gomez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) scored 11 kills, added nine digs and match-high six aces.
In the win over Lasell, Sanchez Velez posted a double-double with a match-high 12 kills and 10 digs, while Bravo added 11 kills, hit .476 and registered a match-high five total blocks.
Wentworth sophomore outside hitter Javier Feliciano (San Juan, Puerto Rico) was sensational for the Leopards, as he combined for 41 kills, including a match-high 20 against Elms College.
Junior middle hitter Dustin Foster (Ashford, CT) knocked down a team-high eight kills and freshman setter Brendan McGourn (Southington, CT) added 19 assists for Lasell in its loss to Elms College.
The Blazers return to North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division play when it hosts Southern Vermont on Monday, February 16. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
