CHICOPEE, MA, Feb. 7, 2009 - Elms College freshman outside hitter Sequiel Sanchez Velez (San Sebastian, Puerto Rico) pounded down a match-high 21 kills and sophomore outside hitter Alberto Bravo (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) added 15 kills to carry the Blazers to a convincing 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 35-33) men's volleyball win over MIT in Saturday night's North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division match at the Maguire Center.

The Blazers (3-7 overall, 2-2 NECVA New England) snapped a four-match losing streak and also earned the program's first win over MIT in 12 all-time meetings dating back to 2003.

MIT, meanwhile, fell to 4-7 overall, 3-3 NECVA New England.

Sanchez Velez, last week's NECVA New England Rookie of the Week, scored 10 of his kills on 16 swings (.438) in the third set for the Blazers, who staved off set point twice before Sanchez Velez and sophomore outside hitter Carlos DeLeon-Gomez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) converted consecutive kills for the 34th and 35th points.

In the first set, DeLeon-Gomez and Sanchez Velez knocked down four kills apiece as the Blazers hit .406 en route to a 30-21 win.

Sanchez Velez and Bravo then nailed down seven kills each to give the Blazers a two-set lead with a 30-28 victory.

Sanchez Velez also added a match-high 11 digs, junior setter Ivan Andujar (Carolina, Puerto Rico) handed out a match-high 50 assists, while Bravo, DeLeon-Gomez and senior libero Marc Carrasco (Tucson, AZ) registered eight digs apiece in the winning effort.

Junior outside hitter Eric Reuland (Laguna Niguel, CA) recorded a team-high 11 kills and junior middle hitter Michael Demyttenaere (Brussels, Belgium) added nine kills and a match-high six total blocks for MIT in the loss.

Elms College returns to NECVA New England Division play at Lesley University on Tuesday, February 10. Match time is 8:00 p.m.
