Blazers Come up Short Against Colby-Sawyer

Score: Elms College 70 | Colby-Sawyer College 71

Records: Blazers 3-13, 1-3 GNAC | Chargers 5-10, 1-2 GNAC

How it Happened:

On the road at Colby-Sawyer College, the Blazers looked to win another conference game and move up in the standings. The Elms offense received a big boost early, as four different Blazers all scored to give Elms an early lead. Sophomore guard Jake Midura (Chicopee, MA) and junior guard Aaron Sanchez were key for the Elms offense in the beginning, as their scoring kept the Blazers on pace with the Chargers in a low scoring first half. Colby-Sawyer responded to the Elms early scoring barrage by making a couple of their own shots. The two teams traded 1 point leads back and forth until the Chargers tied the game at 20 with 6 minutes to go. Sophomore forward RJ Mayfield (Springfield, MA) continued his good shooting stretch of late, hitting baskets from the midrange. Colby-Sawyer went on a little scoring run, extending their lead to 7, but baskets by graduate student guard Tahquell Cadle (Bridgeport, CT) and Midura trimmed the Elms deficit to 3 at halftime.

The Chargers extended their lead to double digits at the beginning of the second half, but Sanchez, Mayfield, and Cadle took on the scoring load for the Blazers. Cutting the lead to four by themselves, Elms was again within striking distance. Sophomore guard Michael Chiodo (Woburn, MA) attacked the lane and hit some pull-up jump shots to keep the score tied. Neither team was willing to give ground. The Blazers hit some late free throws in the half, but still faced a deficit as the time ran down. Mayfield jammed home a dunk and scored a tough layup to cut the deficit to 1 with 30 seconds left, but the Blazers couldn't score at the buzzer, falling 71-70.
