Baseball Falls to Rivier

HOLYOKE, MA - The Elms College Baseball team hosted the Rivier University Raiders in a conference game Sunday afternoon at Mackenzie Stadium.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 7 | Rivier University 8
Record: Blazers 14-12, 4-4 (GNAC) | Raiders 5-15, 2-3 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Rivier would take the lead early in the second inning off a solo home run. The Raiders added to their lead by scoring two runs off walks and a run off of a Blazers error to take a 4-0 lead over the Blazers. Rivier shutout Elms the first four innings of the game, which was a big factor in their success. In the fifth inning, the Blazers finally got on the board off a sacrifice fly from senior Seamus Higgins (Rutland, MA) to cut the Elms deficit to three runs. Elms let another costly run get away after Rivier scored their third run of the game off of a walk, leaving the Blazers with a four run deficit. Seniors Justin Miller (Prospect, CT) and Josh Nohilly (Bristol, CT) both drove in runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 5-3, with the Blazers threatening to come back. However, the Raiders scored off a sacrifice fly in the next half inning, and blanked the Elms offense to remain in control. The Raiders added to their run total late in the game off of an RBI-single and an error. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Blazers went on a run. With the bases loaded, Miller recorded a fielder's choice to drive in junior Blake Bastos (Mineola, NY), and then Nohilly recorded an RBI-double for Elms. The Blazers were not done, as junior George Chaya Jr. (Methuen, MA) drove in a run, and first-year Griffin Levesque (Agawam, MA) recorded an RBI-single to bring the Blazers within one run. Elms did not let Rivier score in the top ninth, leaving them to potentially tie the game in the bottom half. Higgins started the game off on base, but got caught trying to steal second, and the ensuing two Blazer batters struck out and grounded out, sending Elms home with an 8-7 loss.
