Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Blue Jays

HOLYOKE, MA - The Elms College Baseball team hosted the University of Saint Joseph, CT in a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Mackenzie Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Saint Joseph would take the lead early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Elms would respond when graduate student Tyler Galenski (Wilbraham, MA) would hit a single driving in senior Seamus Higgins (Rutland, MA), cutting the Blue Jays lead 1-3. In the bottom of the second inning, senior Josh Nohilly (Bristol, CT) drove in seniors Justin Miller (Prospect, CT) and CJ Moriarty (Glastonbury, CT) with a two-run single. Then junior George Chaya Jr. (Methuen, MA) would ground out to second base, but Nohilly would score, giving the lead to the Blazers. In the third inning, Saint Joseph would tie the game, but Elms would retake the lead with an RBI-single from Moriarty driving in Higgins. The Blue Jays would tie the game again in the top of the fifth inning, Miller would reach base on an error driving in Galenski and Higgins to take the lead. Saint Joseph would score again in the top of the seventh inning, but that would not be enough, as the Blazers would win the contest 7-6.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Higgins would score three runs scored with two hits and a walk.

  • Nohilly would lead the Blazers with two runs batted in, with a hit and a run scored.

Game 2
Elms would have junior Henry Rondon (Ansonia, CT) would take the mound for the second game of the doubleheader. Both sides would go scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, after Miller would ground out to first base but he would drive in Galenski for the first run of the game. Then in the top of the sixth inning, the Blue Jays would score two runs to take the lead, but in the bottom half of the inning, a wild pitch would be thrown and the Blazers would capitalize with Galenski scoring the tying run and Moriarty taking second base. In the top of the seventh inning, Saint Joseph would hit a two-run home run to take back the lead and would score two more runs in the eighth and ninth inning, taking game two 2-6. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Galenski would record two runs scored and a hit.

  • Rondon threw four strikeouts in his seven innings pitched.

UP NEXT: The Blazers will be at home against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Wednesday, April 3rd in a non-conference matchup at 3:30 PM at Mackenzie Stadium.
