Baseball Shuts-out AMCats to Pick Up Their First Conference Win

HOLYOKE, MA - The Elms College Baseball team hosted the Anna Maria AMCats in a conference game on Sunday afternoon at Mackenzie Stadium.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 6 | Anna Maria College 0
Record: Blazers 9-9, 1-1 (GNAC) | AMCats 6-9, 0-1 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trying to break their losing streak, the Blazers took on Anna Maria in the hopes to get a win. The AMCats threatened first in the top of the second inning when they capitalized off some Blazer errors to get onto first and second base with the opportunity to score. However, Elms forced a double play to get out of the jam. In the bottom of half the inning, the Blazers bats came alive. With the bases loaded, junior George Chaya Jr. (Methuen, MA) recorded a two-run single, driving in senior CJ Moriarty (Glastonbury, CT) and senior Justin Miller (Prospect, CT). Senior AJ Cook (Mendon, MA) recorded an RBI single moments later, driving in first-year Griffen Levesque (Agawam, MA). The Blazers followed this up with some great pitching from junior Henry Rondon (Ansonia, CT), who pitched 6 scoreless innings, striking out five AMCat batters, and allowed only two hits. The defense that Elms had been looking for came alive, and in the bottom of the fourth inning, Elms added to their lead when senior Seamus Higgins (Rutland, MA) recorded an RBI single to put the Blazers up 4-0. Elms continued to stifle Anna Maria on defense, getting out of innings with double plays and good defense to keep the lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Levesque boldly stole third base for Elms, and ended up scoring on the play from a throwing error by the AMCats. The Blazers followed this score up in the bottom of the seventh inning when Miller recorded an RBI single, giving the Blazers a 6-0 lead, but more importantly, their ninth win of the season and first in conference play.
