Baseball Lose to Westfield in Non-Conference Action

WESTFIELD, MA - The Elms College Baseball team took on the nearby Westfield State University Owls in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 1 | Westfield State University 15
Record: Blazers 8-8, 0-0 (GNAC) | Owls 9-3, 0-0 (MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Westfield State got on the board early in the first inning courtesy of a two run-triple and a run off of a Blazers error. Sophomore Gino Tarantino (Trumbull, CT) would take the start for the Blazers and would record three strikeouts in his 1.2 innings pitched. Elms could not counter the Owls' runs offensively, as they were held scoreless again in the top of the second inning, and they watched the Owls score five more runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 8-0 early. The Blazers still could not get their bats going, and Westfield State continued to put it on Elms in the bottom third inning courtesy of a three run-double to go up 11-0. Elms broke through in the top of the fourth inning when junior Blake Bastos (Mineola, NY) drove in graduate student Josh Pasini (Enfield, CT) with a single. The Owls did not let that deter them, and in the bottom of the inning scored three more runs and put pressure on the Blazers defense once again. The Owls would add one more run in the bottom half of the fifth inning to go up 15-1. Elms could not get anything going on offense, as they were blanked in multiple innings. Down in a hole early, the Blazers were unable to come back in the game, losing 15-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Bastos - two hits and a run batted in.

UP NEXT: The Blazers will be traveling to Johnson & Wales University on Saturday, March 23 in a conference matchup at 1:00 P.M.
