Baseball Loses to Wentworth in a Hard Fought Home Opener

HOLYOKE, MA - The Elms College Baseball team hosted the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards in a non-conference matchup at Mackenzie Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Elms would get on to the scoreboard first after a past ball was thrown at the plate and senior AJ Cook (Mendon, MA) would score in the bottom half of the first inning. The following at bat, graduate student Tyler Galenski (Wilbraham, MA) would reach base off a fielder's choice and senior Josh Nohilly (Bristol, CT) would score a second run for the Blazers in the inning. The Leopards would then take the lead scoring three runs in the top of the third inning. Elms would come back to tie up the score in the bottom of the third inning after Galeniski doubled to right field and drove in Nohilly to score. In the bottom of the fourth inning, junior George Chaya Jr. (Methuen, MA) would reach base off a fielder's choice, then would go on to steal second base, then as he attempted to steal third base, an error by the third baseman occurred in which Chaya would take advantage of an opportunity to score and give the Blazers a 4-3 lead. In the top of the fifth inning, Wentworth would score eleven runs on Elms to take a 4-15 lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Blazers would respond with six runs of their own. In the bottom of the eighth, the Elms infield would record a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. The Blazers would hold the Leopards scoreless in the top of the ninth inning, then in the bottom half of the inning with the bases loaded, Cook would reach base off a field choice, senior Justin Miller (Prospect, CT) would cross the plate, and Chaya rounded third base attemping to score Elms' twelth run, but was forced to go back to third, and would be tagged out to end the game with a final score of 11-15 in favor of Wentworth.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Junior Matt Miranda (Killingworth, CT) would record the Blazers only strikeout of the afternoon.

UP NEXT: The Elms Baseball team will travel to Springfield, MA to take on Springfield College in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 17th at 12 and 3 PM starts.
