Baseball Loses in Season Opener to Clark With a Battle in the Second Matchup

WORCESTER, MA - The Elms College Baseball team opened up their 2024 season in a losing effort on the road at Clark University Cougars in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1

  • Both sides would keep the game scores for the first two innings, until the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning.

  • The Blazers would hold off Clark the next two innings, until the Cougars bats opened up in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Clark added an additional six runs to their lead.

Game 2

  • The second matchup saw the Cougars take an early 4-0 lead, but the Elms would see their first run of the day off the bat of graduate student Tyler Galenski (Wilbraham, MA) with junior Felix Gutierrez (Holyoke, MA) scoring the run in the top of the third inning.

  • Clark would respond with an additional two runs in the bottom half of that inning, but the Blazers would take the lead in the fourth inning driving in six runs. Senior Seamus Higgins (Rutland, MA) would start things off with a two-run double, scoring fellow seniors Justin Miller (Prospect, CT) and Josh Nohilly (Bristol, CT). Higgins, Gutierrez, and senior AJ Cook (Mendon, MA) would all score later in the inning off wild pitches. The final run of the inning would come off of the bat of graduate student Joe Pasini (Enfield, CT) hitting a single to third base driving in junior George Chaya Jr. (Methuen, MA).

  • The two opposing sides would go scoreless until Clark would take back the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and would off Elms in the top of the seventh inning completing the sweep.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Senior Kyle Sebastyanski (Auburn, MA) threw five strikeouts and allowed five hits in five innings pitched facing 23 batters in the opening matchup.

  • Cook led the Blazers with a total of four hits, two walks, and a run.

  • Higgins drove in a team leading two runs batted in with his double in the fourth inning.

UP NEXT: The Elms Baseball team will take on Chatham University in a doubleheader in the RussMatt Invitational at the Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, FL on Saturday, March 2nd at 5 and 7:30PM.
