Program Record Falls On Senior Day

CHICOPEE, Mass. – An afternoon that began with a Senior Day celebration and ended with a pool and school record marked a day to remember for the Elms College men's and women's swimming teams on Saturday, as the Blazer men picked up a 110-60 win over the University of New England men's club team, and the Elms women lost 178-79 to the UNE varsity women.

Elms seniors Kevin Corcoran (Waterbury, Conn.), Patrick Gay (East Hartford, Conn.) and Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) were recognized for their contributions to the program by head coach Bill Tyler before the meet began, as the trio swam in the final home meet of their careers on Saturday.

To cap off the eventful afternoon, Blazer women Julianne Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.), Cricket Cavar (Vernon, Conn.), Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.), and Brittany North (Palmer, Mass.) set pool and program records in the 800-meter freestyle, finishing the exhibition time trial in 9:53.50.

Mike Losardo (Pittsfield, Mass.) picked up first-place points in the 400 freestyle (4:55.94) and Matthew Nodel (Monson, Mass.) led took the top spot in the 50-meter freestyle (28.57). Eddie Capoldo (Brunswick, Maine) delivered a nice performance in the men's 200 IM, finishing in 2:34.11.

Scianna took the top spot in the women's 800-meter freestyle, finishing in 10:24.25, and also placed third in the 50-meter breaststroke (42.05). North second-place finishes for the Blazer women in the 100-meter butterfly (1:16.03) and 100 free (1:07.44).

The Blazers will now enter the postseason portion of their schedule, competing in the GNAC Championships at Simmons Feb. 1-3 and the NEISDA Championships at MIT Feb. 21-24.
