Swimming Sweeps St. Joseph's (ME) In Home Opener

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College men's and women's swimming team picked up victories over visiting St. Joseph's College (ME) in a dual meet at Partyka Natatorium Saturday afternoon. The men's team posted a 129-82 win over the Monks, while the women's team recorded a 140-108 victory.

On the men's side, senior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) registered a trio of first-place victories in the 50 meter breaststroke (34.83), the 100 meter freestyle (57.05), and the 100 meter breaststroke (1:27.52). Junior Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) logged three victories, touching first in the 50 meter backstroke (31.08), the 50 meter freestyle (26.32) and the 100 meter backstroke (1:06.41). Freshman Eddie Capoldo (Brunsiwck, Maine) picked up a first-place finish in the 200 meter freestyle (2:16.03), while the relay team of Bergstrom, Grippo, Capoldo, and freshman Matt Nodell (Monson, Mass.) placed first in the 200 meter medley relay. Nodell added a second-place finish in the 100 meter freestyle, junior Patrick Gay (East Hartford, Conn.) nabbed second in the 100 meter butterfly (1:14.27), and senior DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) finished second in the 800 meter freestyle (10:35.70). Freshman Matt Kisel (Chicopee, Mass.) logged three third-place finishes, while senior Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) took third in the 100 meter butterfly (1:39.95).

For the women's team, sophomore Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) tallied three first-place finishes in the 50 meter backstroke (35.67), 50 meteer butterfly (34.05) and the 400 meter IM (6:00.35). Freshman Cricket Cavar (Vernon, Conn.) recorded three first-place finishes in the 200 meter freestyle (2:28.12), the 400 meter freestyle (5:10.84) and the 800 meter freestyle (10:36.78). Senior Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) notched two firsts in the 50 meter freestyle (30.67) and the 100 meter freestyle (1:10.62), while freshman Brittany North (Palmer, Mass.) picked up first-place finishes in the 100 meter backstroke (1:20.59) and the 100 meter butterfly (1:23.87). Sophomore Julianne Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.) finished second in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:35.10), and joined Scianna, Cavar and Carrier for a first-place finish in the 200 meter medley relay.

The Blazers will return to the pool for a road trip to Colby-Sawyer for a dual meet Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
