Women’s Basketball Picks Up Road Win At Dean

Franklin, MA – The Elms College women's basketball team defeated the Dean College Bulldogs (63-60) on Tuesday night at Pieri Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference play. The win improves the Blazers overall record to 7-13 and 3-6 in the NECC.

The opening quarter saw back and forth play with the home side keeping a slim lead throughout, taking a (16-12) advantage into the first break.

The second quarter belonged to the Blazers. The visitors quickly jumped out in front, and steadily built its lead. Elms dominated on both ends of the court, putting up 20 points while holding the Bulldogs to only seven, and took a (32-23) advantage into halftime. Shannon Cullen (Brookfield, CT) was big in the quarter, dropping six points and collecting two rebounds.

Elms continued to build on its lead in the third quarter behind nine points from Lashaunte White's (Miami, FL), outscoring Dean (14-10), giving the visitors a comfortable 13 point lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.

Elms held a nine point advantage with only 4:34 remaining and looked ready to collect a big NECC road win. The home side however, made it very interesting in the final minutes. Dean managed to close the gap to three after a made layup at the 1:51 mark. The Blazer lead was cut to one (57-56) after another Bulldog layup. Dean would come all the way back and jump out front (58-57) with only 28 seconds left to play.  The Blazers took the lead back (59-58) after White sank two free throws, but the lead was short lived as Dean once again made a layup taking back the lead (60-59) with nine seconds to play. The Blazers would not be denied, Regina LeBlanc (Enfield, CT) was fouled at the six second mark. The junior stepped up and sank both free throws pushing Elms back in front (61-60). The Bulldogs had a final chance, but were unable to execute, and had to commit a foul sending Angelica Puguero-Flores (Springfield, MA) to line where she iced the game by making both free throws, giving the Blazers the (63-60) road win.

White, LeBlanc, and Peguuero-Flores led the way, combining for 40 points.

Elms is back in action on Saturday 1/8 at 3:30PM when they travel to Lesley University for an NECC game.
