BROOKLINE, Mass. - In what could have been the last home game in Newbury Women's Basketball history, the Nighthawks were impressive in a 79-60 win.
The Nighthawks had one of their best first quarters this season, using a 13-0 run to open up a 17-4 lead in the opening quarter. The Blazers were able to bounce back and cut into the deficit with a 7-2 run to trail 19-11 after one quarter.
Second quarter, same as the first, with Newbury using a 12-3 scoring run to lead 31-14, their biggest margin of the half. But again, the Blazers found an answer in the late stages with a 10-1 run, including a pair of three's made by junior Samantha Lynes to ultimately cut the Newbury lead to 38-27.
In the third, the Blazers managed to pull within two possessions, but over the last 6:06 of the quarter, the Nighthawks outscored the Blazers 21-6, including 12 points by Sanders to lead 63-41 after three quarters.
The Blazers were unable to mount a comeback in the fourth and saw the Nighthawks pull away to secure the win.
Blazers junior Molly Moulton scored a team-high 13 points in 29 minutes. Senior Niah Pantry added 11 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Angelica Peguero-Flores had six points and 10 rebounds.
Nighthawk's sophomore Jaymesha Sanders, finishing with a program-record 38 points to go with 18 rebounds in 34 minutes and Tatianna Occena added 7 assists.
The Blazers are back in action this Saturday at 1pm when they host Dean College.
