Blazer Women Take Down Owls 76-56

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's basketball team opened on a 6-0 run and never looked back, cruising to a wire-to-wire 76-56 victory over UMaine-Presque Isle in Picknelly Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman McKenzie Huria (Terryville, Conn.) led three double-digit Blazer scorers with 17 points. She hit 7-of-9 from the field including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and added three assists in the game. Molly Moulton (North Adams, Mass.) added 16 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals for Elms and Niah Pantry (New Haven, Conn.) added 10 points, four rebounds and three steals despite battling foul trouble throughout the game.

Regina LeBlanc fueled the Blazers offense with eight assists and just one turnover. As a team, Elms (2-1) finished with 22 assists on 28 made baskets with 20 turnovers.

Rhylee Wright (Frenchville, Maine) led the Owls (1-2) with 26 points. Wright hit 9-of-15 from the field and 7-of-8 at the free throw line and added eight rebounds but also committed nine turnovers. Emilia Churchill (Washburn, Maine) and Hunter Mercier (Fairfield, Maine) each added 11 points for the Owls.

The Blazers held a slim 39-37 advantage on the glass and out-shot the Owls throughout the contest. Elms hit 47.5 percent (28-of-59) from the field and 6-of-11 from 3-point range while UMaine-Presque Isle shot 29.4 percent (15-of-51) for the game and hit just 3-of-15 from deep.

Shortly after jumping out to the quick 6-0 lead, Elms used a much bigger 15-0 run to build a 23-5 advantage late in the first quarter. The Owls chipped away throughout the second quarter to cut the Elms lead to 42-34 at the break. Elms built that lead to 21, 63-42, heading into the fourth quarter and maintained a comfortable advantage throughout the final 10 minutes.

The Blazers wrap up their season-opening four-game home-stand on Nov. 20 with the New England Collegiate Conference opener against Bay Path. Tuesday's game tips off at 5:00 p.m. and is the first half of a double-header with the Blazer men, who host Trinity that evening at 7:00 p.m. UMaine-Presque Isle is off until Nov. 27 when the Owls visit Unity College.
