Track And Field Posts Eight School Record At MHC Spring Fling

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Elms College men's and women's track and field squads delivered one of their best performances of the season, setting eight school records at the Mount Holyoke College Spring Fling Saturday afternoon.

The men's squad delivered their best performance of the season, posting a second-place finish with 81 points during the event. Senior Trifon Bish (St. Catherine, Jamaica) won three events on the day while setting a trio of school records, taking first in the 100 meter dash (11.50), the long jump (7.07m) and the triple jump (14.71m). Bish moves up to fourth nationally in the triple jump and 14th in the country in the long jump. Junior Jeremy Cruz (Perth Amboy, N.J.) won the javelin event, setting a new school record in the event with a mark of 35.80 meters, while posting a personal best in the 200 meter dash (31.08). Sophomore Anthony Romei (Enfield, Conn.) finished sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.73. Freshman Rich Hernandez (North Branford, Conn.) placed second in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:39.76. Junior Donald Whittle (Somers, Conn.) claimed second in the long jump with a mark of 7.05 meters. Freshman Edwin Burgos (Boston, Mass.) finished fourth in the 100 meter dash (12.34) and scored a personal-best in the long jump (5.64m). Junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) took fourth in the javelin (28.24m), while freshman Paul Ferraro (Walpole, Mass.) posted a new personal best in the event with a mark of 24.45 meters. Junior Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) delivered a personal best in the 400 meter (1:06.97), while freshman Michael Campos (Naugatuck, Conn.) logged a 12.47 in the 100 meter dash and classmate Adrian Wong finished 13th in the 400 meter dash (1:10.64). The 4x100 team of Bish, Campos, Burgos and Whittle finished second in the event in a new school record time of 45.29.

Freshman Samantha Weigel (Palmer, Mass.) notched four top-10 finishes, including a new school record in the triple jump (8.63m). Junior Rachel Connell (Easthampton, Mass.) set a new school record in the long jump with a mark of 4.35 meters. Junior Sarah Tatgenhorst (Winterport, Maine) finished fourth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:18.38, while freshman Emma Morton (Southwick, Mass.) placed fifth in the 5000 meter run at 22:37.20. Junior Trisha Doret (Boston, Mass.) recorded a pair of personal bests in the 100 meter dash (15.68) and the 200 meter dash (31.46), while sophomore Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) notched personal in the 400 meter dash (1:21.21). Sophomore Yoselyn Feliz (Springfield, Mass.) tallied personal bests in the 100 meter dash (16.66) and the long jump (3.11m). Freshman Meghan Ballentine (Gardner, Mass.) took sixth in the 400 meter dash (1:16.83), while junior Latisha Rocke (Amherst, Mass.) placed seventh in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:18.35. The 4x100 team of Connell, sophomore Nika Orsaris (Hartford, Conn.), Doret and Ballentine finished fifth with a time of 59.25.

The Blazers will look to post more national qualifying marks when they return to action at the Springfield College Invitational Saturday.
