Blazer Swimming Participates In Hour Of Power For 10th Time

CHICOPEE, Mass. – For 60 grueling minutes on Tuesday the Elms College men’s and women’s swim teams will summon all their grit and determination as they race non-stop from wall to wall. The Blazers won’t be squaring off against an arch-rival or fighting for school records. Individual lineup spots will not be up for grabs. Instead, they’ll be swimming for something bigger than themselves.

For the 10th time, the Blazer swim teams will participate in the annual Hour of Power Relay, aiming to generate donations for cancer research being done at the University of Chicago. The hour-long relay begins at 4:15 p.m. in the Partyka Natatorium.

The Hour of Power Relay started at Carleton College after swimmer Ted Mullin died in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

“This is an event that is bigger than any one individual,” Blazer coach Bill Tyler said in a letter to the Elms College community. “It is physically exhausting and emotionally draining, yet upon completion there is a sense of greater good and a job well done.”

The Ted Mullin Fund recently surpassed $1.25 million in donations and the Hour of Power accounts for more than 60 percent of the funds raised since 2006. The 2018 edition is the 13th annual Hour of Power.

The Elms community is invited to the Partyka Natatorium to support the Blazers in action during this event. Donations to the Ted Mullin Fund will be accepted.
