Men's Swimming Races Past Colby-Sawyer, Women Edged By Chargers

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Elms men's team posted their third straight victory, while the women's team fell to host Colby-Sawyer College in a dual meet at Knight Natatorium. The Blazers men's team claimed a 131-69 victory, and the women's squad was edged out 133-106 by the Chargers.

For the men's team, junior Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) logged a trio of first-place finishes, winning the 50 yard backstroke (27.44), the 50 yard freestyle (23.88), and the 100 yard backstroke (58.76). Seniors Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N. H.) and D.J. Sherman (Winstead, Conn.), and freshman Eddie Capoldo (Brunswick, Maine) each nabbed a pair of first-place finishes. Bergstrom touched first in the 100 yard butterfly (58.30) and the 100 yard freestyle (51.99), Sherman led the way in the 50 yard breaststroke (37.56) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:21.13), and Capoldo won the 200 yard freestyle (2:01.38) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:36.88). Freshman Matt Nodell (Monson, Mass.) nabbed first in the 1000 yard freestyle (13:02.61) with a pair of third-place finishes, while senior Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.), junior Patrick Gay (East Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Joshua Guntly (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman Matt Kisel (Chicopee, Mass.) all grabbed second-place finishes.

On the women's side, freshman Brittany North (Palmer, Mass.) registered a trio of first-place finishes in the 50 yard butterfly (31.54), the 100 yard IM (1:12:01), and the 200 yard freestyle (2:14.82).  Freshman Cricket Cavar (Vernon, Conn.) placed first in the 500 yard freestyle (5:55.26) and the 1000 yard freestyle (12:15.39), while the relay team of North, Cavar, senior Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) and sophomore Julianne Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.) finished first in the 200 yard medley relay. Sophomore Meredith Townsley (Belchertown, Mass.) tallied three second-place finishes in the 50 yard butterfly (35.87), the 100 yard butterfly (1:24.32), and the 100 yard IM (1:20.79). Carrier placed second in the 50 yard freestyle (27.72) and the 200 yard freestyle (2:15.68), while junior Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) came in second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:21.62). Freshman Victoria Wanko (South Yarmouth, Mass.) claimed third in the 50 yard butterfly (41.37), and classmate Ashley Krzykowski (Agawam, Mass.) finished third in the 500 yard freestyle (7:53.46).

The Blazers will return to the pool with a meet at UMass-Dartmouth Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Tripp Athletic Center.
