Men’s Soccer Battles To 0-0 Draw With Curry

Chicopee, MA- The Elms College mens' soccer team drew 0-0 on Wednesday night against Curry College at Leary Field. With this result, the Blazers are now 1-6-3 on the season.

The game started out fast, physical, and competitive. Each team had opportunities to take the lead in the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Curry were inches away from taking the lead as midfielder Jonathan Sarkis (East Walpole, MA) blasted a header off the woodwork in the 23rd minute. Elms had their chances in the first half as well, the best coming from senior Babba Jaden (South Sudan) had two shots on goal.

Both teams came out and matched the fast, physical, and competitive style from the start of the match. The game was tense, as both teams felt they needed a result. Elms came close to capturing  the lead with shots from Alex Egan (Watertown, MA) and Justin Szwajkowski (Westhampton, MA), but Curry goalkeeper Jan Bacerra (Chappaqua, NY) was there to keep the game scoreless. Late in the second half, Curry had key chances to win the game, however,  Blazers keeper Julian Brosi (West Newbury, MA) stopped all six shots he would face to keep Elms in the game. The countdown soon came to zero with the game heading into overtime.

During OT, once again, both teams had chances to win the game but nothing was getting past the goalkeepers. Elms came close as they had a total of two shots in the OT period compared to the Colonials one. The Blazers had multiple chances from two free kicks whipped in by Duarte, however, they simply could not find the finishing touch. Curry had the best chance in overtime as they were again inches away from finding the game winner. A ball played from the wing into the box resulted in what looked like the game winner for Curry, however, quick thinking freshman, Yanni Koci (Bristol, CT) was there to clear the ball off the line to get the Blazers a point in the 0-0 draw.

Egan, Jaden, and Szwajkowski combined for 11 shots. Brosi earned his first clean sheet of the season with 6 saves.

The Blazers are in action again on Saturday, October 5th, against New England College in NECC play at 12pm on Leary Field. The theme for Saturday is whiteout!!!
