Women's Volleyball Falls in Three Sets at Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College women's volleyball team shut-out Elms College, 3-0, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action to remain perfect in conference play, improving to 3-0, Saturday afternoon. Junior middle hitter Courtney Banks (Corona, Calif.) posted a .476 attack percentage notching 10 kills on 21 attempts.
Newbury set the tone early, hitting .462 as a team in game one to take a 1-0 match lead. Sophomore outside hitter Lina Miranda (Brockton, Mass.) was nearly perfect from the floor tallying five kills on six attempts for a staggering .833 attack percentage. Banks and fellow junior, outside Kataya Sykes (Brockton, Mass.) followed up with three kills.
In the second set, the Nighthawks kept the heat on the Blazers. Banks led the offense registering three kills on six attempts while junior Gabby Aldaco (Springdale, Ark.) was solid in the back row with five defensive digs en route to the 25-19 win to take the 2-0 match lead.
The Nighthawks sealed the game with a 25-17 win in the third set. Miranda was on fire tallying five kills while Banks was right behind her with four kills on attempts to hit .500 in the set. Sophomore setter Marlen Reynoso(Springdale, Ark.) paced the offense with 10 assists.
Sophomore middle hitter Lindsey McNiff (Kingston, Mass.) tallied five kills to lead the Blazers. First year middle hitter Rachel Magnuson (Miller Place, N.Y.) and sophomore right side hitter Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) followed up with four kills. Senior setter Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) paced the offense with 16 assists.
Newbury remains undefeated in conference play improving to 4-0 and 11-7 overall while Elms falls to 4-13 and 1-2 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court on Wednesday October 14th when they travel to New London, Conn. for a 6 p.m. tilt against Mitchell College. The Blazers will also be in action on Wednesday when they go on the road to face the defending champion Regis College at 7 p.m.
