Castleton Sweeps Women's Volleyball

CASTLETON, Vt. – Looking for a second straight win, Castleton came through with an impressive 3-0 sweep of visiting Elms on Friday evening in Glenbrook Gym. The Blazers move to 2-10, while Castleton improves to 6-4.

The Spartans registered 33 kills to just 11 errors while the Blazers had 26 kills but 28 attack errors as they dropped to 2-9 with the loss. Castleton, meanwhile, moved to 6-4 overall as the team had nine different players record at least one kill.

Castleton trailed 7-6 in the first set but outscored Elms 19-6 the rest of the way to earn the 25-13 victory. The second set was closer and the Blazers trailed just 18-16 before the Spartans pulled away for the 25-19 win. Castleton didn't trail in the final set, winning 25-16.

Brittany Brayman and Cassidy Tedeschi recorded seven kills and 12 digs apiece to pace the team. Amanda Chambers added four kills and team-high 13 digs while Kristi Lawless contributed 11 digs, two kills and two aces. Eight different players had an assist, led by Alex Madsen with eight and Shelby Smyth with six.

For Elms, freshman Danielle Redding (Las Vegas, Nev.) was the top hitter, recording nine kills to go with seven digs. Sophomore Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) and senior Alex Mack (Wilbraham, Mass.) tied for the team lead with 13 digs while sophomore Kate Moriarty (Agawam, Mass.) contributed 13 digs and six kills. Senior Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) dished off a match-high 24 assists in the loss.

The Blazers are back on the court with a road trip to Pine Manor College Tuesday night. Gametime is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they host Sage at 7 pm.
