Women's Swimming Splits Double Dual-Meet At Eastern Connecticut

WILLIMANTIC, CT, Jan. 30, 2008 - Elms College sophomore Liz Walker (Holyoke, MA) captured a combined three individual first place finishes to help the Blazers post a split of Wednesday night's double-dual women's swim meet at the Sports Center Pool on the campus of Eastern Connecticut State University.

Eastern Connecticut (8-4) defeated Elms College 76-19, and Wheelock College 74-20. Elms College (7-8) gained a split with a 53-37 triumph over Wheelock (4-6).

Against Wheelock, Elms College swimmers captured three individual firsts, as well as the 200 yard medley relay. Walker claimed the 200-yard individual medley (2:25.39) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.33), and senior Kaity Jo Bryll (East Hartland, CT) won the 100 yard freestyle (1:00.15). In the 200 yard breaststroke, Walker also edged Wilson of Eastern by 22 hundreths of a second for her team's only victory against the Warriors.

In addition to two individual firsts, Walkers swam the second leg and Bryll the third leg of the 200-yard medley relay which defeated Wheelock in a time of 2:13.05.

Six different Eastern Connecticut State University individuals won events - led by double winner Sarah Barber (Meriden) in the distance freestyle - as the Warriors wrapped up their home season with wins over Elms College and Wheelock College.

Barber posted her fastest times this season in capturing the 500 yard freestyle (27.28) and 1000-yard freestyle (11:02.42). Also recording their fastest times this year among Eastern's winners were freshman Abby Bolduc (Windsor) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:28.36), first-year sophomore Kelsy Doheny (West Haven) in the 100 yard freestyle, and freshman Katie Curran (Norwood, MA) in the 200 yard backstroke (2:30.96).

Additional individual winners for the Warriors were sophomore Jessica Wilson (Torrington) and freshmen  Katie Curran (Norwood, MA) and Amy Arisco (Wallingford). Wilson won the 200-yard individual medley (2:24.07), Curran the 200 yard backstroke (2:30.96), and Arisco the 50-yard freestyle (27.28). In her first effort in the 50-freestyle, Arisco posted the third-fastest time among Eastern swimmers this season in that event. Barber has the fastest times among Eastern swimmers this year in the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle, as does  Doheny in the 100-freestyle.

Wilson, Bolduc and Doheny also contributed to the winning 200-yard medley relay and Barber and Arisco swam a leg of the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay.

Elms College concludes its home schedule on Saturday, February 2 when it hosts Regis College. Meet time at Partyka Natatorium is 2:30 p.m.
