Women's Soccer Upset By Becker In NECC Quarterfinal

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The third-seeded Elms College women's soccer team saw its season draw to a close on Saturday afternoon as sixth-seeded Becker College knocked the Blazers out of the New England Collegiate Conference tournament with a 2-0 quarterfinal win at Leary Field.

The Hawks (10-7-3) opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Lindsey Kieth (Sutton, Mass.) knocked home a penalty kick. The Hawks earned the PK after the Elms wall was whistled for a hand ball inside the box on a Becker free kick.

Elms was pressuring for an equalizer throughout the contest until the Hawks all but sealed the deal with an 85th-minute insurance goal from Skyler Tenney (Jaffrey, N.H.). Emma Schoenbeck's (Gorham, N.H.) through ball led Tenney behind the Blazer defense, and all she had to do was beat Elms goalkeeper Rebecca Molin (West Hartford, Conn.) with a hard shot to the back of the net to give Becker the decisive 2-0 advantage.

Elms held a 9-7 advantage in shots and 5-3 lead in shots on goal. Elms also had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks and put well-placed balls in front of goal on all four attempts, including two that Becker goalkeeper Lyndsey Cobb-Wilkins (Elmira, N.Y.) was forced to deflect over the crossbar.

The Hawks will await the results of the other three NECC quarterfinal contests to learn their semifinal opponent. This weekend's winners will advance to the semifinals on Oct. 31, hosted by the top remaining seeds.
